Manchester United Eyes Pedro Goncalves as Bruno Fernandes Faces Saudi Move

Bruno Fernandes' Potential Exit from Manchester United

Manchester United is bracing for the potential exit of Bruno Fernandes, who is reportedly in advanced discussions with Saudi club Al-Hilal. The Premier League team has earmarked Sporting Lisbon's Pedro Goncalves as a primary target to fill the captain's role if Fernandes departs. Al-Hilal has presented an eye-watering offer to Fernandes, proposing a three-year deal valued at £180 million, and they are urging a decision by Friday.

Goncalves: A Key Target for United

The 30-year-old Fernandes has been a standout player for Manchester United this season, contributing 19 goals and 20 assists. Should he accept the lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, the financial gain would enable United to activate Goncalves' £70 million release clause.

Pedro Goncalves, aged 26, was already on Manchester United's radar before the Saudi interest emerged. A product of Sporting Lisbon, he thrived under the management of Ruben Amorim, who is now at the helm of United, during the club's title-winning season in 2020-21. That year, Goncalves netted 23 goals and provided four assists in 32 matches after transitioning to a more offensive midfield position.

Versatility and Recent Injury

Goncalves is recognized for his versatility, capable of playing both centrally and on the flanks. Being four years younger than Fernandes, he presents a youthful option with a proven track record of scoring in Portugal. He has recently returned from a thigh injury that kept him out since November, yet interest in him remains strong, with clubs like Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen previously tracking his situation.

Complications in Transfer Negotiations

However, any discussions regarding Goncalves could become more complex due to ongoing rumors about Sporting's striker Viktor Gyokeres. Both Napoli and Arsenal are interested in the Swedish forward, who has a valuation of £67 million. Sporting would be hesitant to lose both key players in the same transfer window.

Financial Implications for Sporting

If Fernandes decides to join Al-Hilal, Sporting Lisbon stands to gain financially as well. The Portuguese club included a 10% sell-on clause when they sold Fernandes to United for £47 million plus add-ons.

This clause entitles Sporting to a share of any profit United makes from a future sale. Although Ruben Amorim has indicated a desire to keep his captain, he is also open to reinvestment should Fernandes choose to leave. The ball is now in the Portuguese midfielder's court, with Al-Hilal requesting a final decision by Friday. Meanwhile, United is taking proactive steps behind the scenes to prepare for a potential summer overhaul.
